How To Cook Broccoli

how to cook broccoli

Preparing broccoli:

When selecting broccoli, look for firm, tight, green florets. Avoid soft/floppy broccoli or florets with a yellow tinge.

Preparation of broccoli is fairly simple;

  • Wash thoroughly under cold water.

  • Place broccoli on a clean chopping board & using a sharp knife, cut it into manageable sized florets. Leaving 1-2cm of stalk.

Boiling:

  • Bring a pan of salted water to the boil. There should be enough water to just cover the broccoli.

  • Carefully add the broccoli florets (being careful not to splash yourself with hot water).

  • Simmer until the broccoli is a bright green colour (usually around 5 minutes), and it is tender. Test with a knife.

Steaming:

  • Place a steaming insert into a pan of water & bring to the boil.

  • Place broccoli florets into the steamer insert. Make sure the water is not in contact with the steamer insert.

  • Cover & cook for 5 minutes, until bright green & tender.

Microwaving:

  • Place broccoli florets in a microwave safe dish.

  • Add two to three tablespoons of water over the broccoli.

  • Cover  & microwave on high for 3-5 minutes until bright green & tender.

Serving suggestions:

  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice.

  • Grated cheese.
